More Pet Vaccinations
Rabbit
Our practice routinely vaccinates rabbits against Myxomatosis and viral Haemorrhagic
Disease.
These are two diseases which can afflict both wild and domestic rabbits, both
are deadly diseases so vaccination is very important.
A rabbit can be vaccinated against Myxomatosis from six weeks of age and can
then be given a booster vaccine every year thereafter.
Myxomatosis is usually spread by the rabbit flea which is frequently found on
wild rabbits although is less common on pet rabbits. On biting the rabbit the
virus is placed in the skin and then transmitted to a local lymph node and then
it enters the bloodstream where it quickly spreads around the body. Recovery
from the disease is possible but the recovery rates are low and convalescence
is protracted.
In contrast, viral Haemorrhagic Disease kills most of those that become infected
with it. The acute form of the disease can be very distressing, attacking the
liver and causing severe bleeding. A rabbit less than six weeks of age has natural
resistance to this disease but resistance wains. It is for this reason that vaccination
is recommended from the age of ten weeks and yearly booster
vaccinations are necessary.
